Ruth E. Carter takes home Oscar for Best Costume Design!

On Sunday evening, the Academy awarded Ruth E. Carter an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Black Panther. The costume design veteran is now the first Black woman to ever receive an Oscar in this category.

Ruth E. Carter’s work has been monumental in the world of film for quite some time, especially for predominantly Black productions. Before Black Panther, she had done work for Lee Daniel’s The Butler, Malcolm X, What’s Love Got To Do With It, Amistad, and Spike Lee’s Oldboy. Her designs have always left the audience with a taste of nostalgia; she has mastered the ability to create pieces so intricate and realistic that it allows the producers to fluidly share the story. Carter’s win during the Oscars is a pivotal moment for Black women in costume design everywhere. With this win, as stated by the designer herself, ‘Finally The Door is Wide Open.’
